How do you deal with those nagging little illnesses?

Ian hated the hospital but more than that he hated being bedridden. Ian was by nature hyperactive. He always had energy and wanted to be up doing something or socializing. Trapped in a room with no one and nothing to do; worse not being able to sit or stand, put him in a mood so foul that the staff had been flipping coins outside his door. He’d heard them and it roused his already failing ability to like people.

He’d read two books in the past day but nothing seemed to distract him from the fact he was trapped in bed yet again. The metal brace bolted down to keep his leg still until the surgery made shifting to sit up or move at all impossible. Ian was furious with his leg. Maybe he could convince them to just chop it off. He could live without a leg but he couldn’t stand another second laying the hospital bed.

The door handle turned and Ian was ready to sling some cynical remark about poking at him every five minutes. The words caught when he saw the cheerful old man that the door revealed. He didn’t really want to see John. After all, the leg injury was in a long way his fault. However, at this point Ian would welcome any sort of company.

“How are you, Ian?” Hammond seemed genuinely concerned.

“How do you think?” Ian snapped at him but quickly regretted it when he saw who was with Hammond.

“Dad.”

“Dr. Malcolm.”

Ian couldn’t help but smile when Kelly, Lex and Tim came rushing the bed. “Kids.”

“Watch the leg.” He warned as they crawled into the bed. They all tried to hug him at once.

“I thought you could use some better company.” Hammond commented as he walked over to the bed.

“I brought a book.” Tim exclaimed as he pushed the book at Ian.

“The Cosmos.” Ian read as he tried to get the book before he was hit in the face with it.

“Read it to us.”

“Oh..ok.” Ian smiled as they settled in. One girl on each side and Tim stretched out with his elbows propped up on Ian’s stomach.

“I hate to ask this…” Hammond interjected. “..Could you?” He pointed at the children.

“Sure.. uh…is everything alright?” Ian wasn’t sure he liked this.

“Yes, yes.” John wasn’t very convincing. “My nephew has said some things to the press that I need to clear up.”

Ian nodded. Some part of him deep down inside hated Ludlow. While Hammond’s idea with building the park was a huge mistake Ian wouldn’t trust anyone else in charge of it. Everyone else would commercialize the place and worse things would happen. Triceratops rides were always the first thing he thought of. Ian shook his head.

“Will you be alright with them?”

“Ja’nee will be here later.” Ian was capable, even like this, to take care of the three.

“If you need anything call.” John was smiling. “I’ll be back before visiting hours are over.”

Ian looked to the book as Kelly and Lex squirmed to get comfortable on the bed. He understood. It wasn’t comfortable and he wished he could squirm. Once they settled in Ian started reading to them. They were the perfect distraction for this hell. The first paragraph and Tim was already asking questions. It would take hours to read the book which was perfect.

The great thing about kids was an hour later they were all three asleep and Ian was back to his own book. A nurse was nice enough to move Tim and Lex to the other bed in the room. They were out and not likely to wake up any time soon.
