Somewhere in Utah

Written Long ago for Yuletide: Read it in its original place here

Alan had returned to digging almost immediately after the debacle on the island. He wanted to forget it and the easiest way was to throw himself into his work. There was a new quarry to be cleared and he needed money for his dig. That was the first priority always. Still he had nightmares of the Tyrannosaurus on occasion. Nothing was as unnerving as being haunted by his work in the flesh besides knowing someone had brought them to life. In the end though it had added to his work. He knew how a Velociraptor moved and what a Brachiosaur bugle sounded like. Oddly, despite his fears, he would have done it again even with the knowledge he had now. It was the chance of a lifetime even if it haunted him at times. Grant was alone on the cliff side setting up dig sections when the car pulled up below. Cars pulled up all the time at the site so he paid no mind until the honking started.

"Wait!" Alan needed to finish setting the stake but the honking continued. When he looked down the hillside he saw someone he didn't expect. What was Ian doing out here? Setting his tools aside Alan made his way down to the road.

"Is this what you do out here? Do you just dig randomly and hope for the best?"

Alan hadn't expected any less of a greeting from Dr. Malcolm. "No."

"Ah. Well at least these dinosaurs are harmless." Ian leaned on the car.

Grant shook his head looking up at the layers of rock and fossil. "The island was the creation of a madman in a sandbox."

"Chaos theory at work." Ian walked up next to Grant.

"Man's arrogance." Alan walked back up the slope followed closely by Ian.

"Did they call you about site B?" Ian asked as he tried to keep up. Alan only made it a few feet before he stopped. Alan was trying to imagine that he misheard Ian or that this was some joke.

"They made another park?" Grant turned slowly to see Ian grinning. As soon as he saw that smile plastered in Malcolm's expression he knew something was wrong, horribly wrong.

"Oh no. You see they had this other place they didn't tell anyone else about until some tourist stumbled on it." Ian elaborated everything with small motions of his hands.

"They what?" Grant didn't want to believe it.

"They have a second island. One with no fences." Ian restated. "They have an island where the dinosaurs have been roaming free for four years."

"And these tourists" Alan asked with mounting concern.

"We both know what happens when people stumble on dinosaurs." Ian smiled sarcastically. "It isn't so good for the humans. They turn into dino-snacks."

Alan took his hat off and wiped his brow on his shirt sleeve. This was madness. "When?"

Ian shrugged. "I think they made it before the park. A sort of experiment to see what would happen if they tossed everything together."

Grant frowned. "Please tell me you're joking."

"I couldn't even make this up." Ian admitted as Grant started up the hillside again.

Grant got down at his site and put on his hat. Then went back to work stringing off the measured sections while trying to forget what Ian had mentioned. It wasn't working.

"Is this a bone here?" Ian was pointing with as much curiosity as a child.

Grant leaned over examining the area. "Yes it is."

"What kind?"

"Full of questions aren't you?" Alan took a closer look. "Velociraptor. The claw here."

"The one that guts you when you aren't looking." Ian nodded.

"Yeah." Grant smiled and returned to his previous work. "That claw."

A long almost awkward silence passed between the two men. All the time Ian watched Grant do his work on the hillside.

"Have you seen Ellie? You know since the island." Ian finally broke the silence.

Grant's brow furrowed as he glanced up at Ian. "Is that why you came all the way out here?"

Dr. Grant couldn't help the edge of defensiveness.

"No." Malcolm raised his hands in relent.

"Then why are you here?" Grant stopped his work again. He sat back on the rocky hillside and faced Ian waiting for an answer.

"Well, they sent me out here to talk to you about a team to go to the island." Ian chuckled at his own foolishness.

"You are crazy." Grant answered without giving Ian a chance to breathe another word. He didn't want to talk about the other island or acknowledge that another one existed. He really wanted Ian to leave him alone. Alan took the initiative and started farther up the hillside.

Ian got to his feet. "Grant. They're going to call her." Defeat showed in his expression. "They already sent Sarah."

Alan stopped in his tracks but didn't look down. "I'm sorry Ian." Grant was being honest. He couldn't imagine having his girlfriend sent alone to one of those islands.

"So am I." Malcolm responded and put his hands on his hips. "I knew you wouldn't agree to this. You have too much sense."

Grant chuckled. "You came all the way out here to tell me Hammond is going to call Ellie about a trip to the island?"

"Yes." Ian responded flatly.

The way Ian responded was odd and so unlike the man he knew. Grant thought it through. What if Ellie decided to go again and Grant had already said no? He didn't want to think about that.

"I know where her dig site is." Ian added as he watched Grant mill over what was being said. "Do you want a ride?"

Grant looked out on the landscape and started back down. "Where is she?"

"Fifty miles north of here." Ian answered as Grant headed down the hill past him.

"Get in the car." Grant hollered back. He didn't want Ellie back in danger. Not with dinosaurs and no fences. They had been bad enough when they had fences separating them from the people. What madman sends people into an area where there are no fences after the mess last time?
